He started playing baseball when he was just 8 years old. When he graduated in 2001, Ben did not hear from any professional scouts or recruiters so he thought he had no chance in the Major Leagues. His high school coach encouraged him to join a summer camp that showcased senior baseball players. He received an offer to play at Olivet Nazarene University where he was shortstop and second base.
