Born to a 16-year-old mother on August 15, 1995, Keith Cozart, stage name Chief Keef, is an American rapper and record producer from Chicago, Illinois. Keef had been estranged from his biological father since his infancy. From an early age, he started rapping using this mother’s karaoke machine to record tapes. He dropped out of Dyett High School at the age of 15.

Following his dropping out he started focusing more towards rap. And by 2011 was already famous in the Chicago South Side area for this mix tapes. One of his songs released during his early career titled “I Don’t Like” had become something of a local hit in the Chicago area. It eventually caught the attention of fellow Chicago rapper Kanye West, who created a remix of it with rappers Pusha T, Jadakiss, and Big Sean, during 2012. It was then Keef shot up to fame leading to a bidding war amongst labels to sign him.

Keef began his career in mainstream music by singing with Interscope Records. The deal was worth $6,000,000 along with a three album layout and $440,000as an advance towards establishing his label called Glory Boyz Entertainment. By the end of 2012, he had released his first album titled “Finally Rich” which featured guest rappers such as 50 Cent and Wiz Khalifa. On his 18th birthday in August 2013 he further released mixtapes which received negative reviews for the most part.

In October 2014 Keef was dropped by Interscope Records but it was stated his second album would be released, this, however, failed to materialize. Keef then successfully released a collaborative mix tape with Gucci Mane, titled “Big Gucci Sosa.” Rolling Stones ranked it as 25th among 40 of the best rap albums. During the same year, he was also then signed on by Film On Music.

On July 11, 2015, one of Keef’’s longtime friends and a member of Keef’s Glo Gang label was killed in a drive-by shooting. Upon fleeing the drivers then hit a baby stroller carrying a 13-month old baby killing him instantly. Keef then announced holding a free concert in memory of his friend and to help the family of the infant. Chicago’s mayor officer, however, wouldn’t allow that stating he was an “unacceptable role model.” Following this incident, in March 2016 Keef announced his retirement from rap.
