Dr. Dre was born in Compton, California on February 18, 1965, but no one knew him by that name… yet. Andre Romelle Young was a first child and had trouble getting good grades in school. After transferring multiple schools because of bad grades, Young focus more on his social life and entertainment the rest of high school years.
In 1984, Andre would frequent clubs and often watch DJs and rappers perform live. After a short time, he became a DJ in the same clubs himself under the name “Dr. J”. He came up with the name because of his favorite basketball player Julius Evring.
While DJing in the clubs, he met Antoine Carraby (Dj Yella) and they began creating mix tapes in the very clubs they met in. At the same time, the name Dr. Dre was born as he began to refer to himself as the “Master of Mixology”.
In 1986, Dr. Dre found his breakout moment when he met O’shea Jackson (Ice Cube) and Eazy-E who ran a local rap label called Ruthless Records. During his time with Ruthless Records, Dr. Dre started generating some pretty decent income.
When he left NWA and joined Death Row Records (founded by Suge Knight) his net worth began to really take off. The Chronic was the first album released by the label and it topped the charts, now becoming a cultural phenomenon.
Dr. Dre’s net worth doesn’t just come from music; Dr. Dre is a very successful entrepreneur as well. He sold his headphones company Beats to Apple for $3 billion dollars which earned him $155 from HTC and $800 million from Apple.
