Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson born October 25, 1984, better known by her stage name Katy Perry, is an American singer and songwriter. As a child she would often sing in church and as a teenager pursued gospel music as a career.
In 2001 Perry signed up with Red Hill Records to release her debut album under her birth name. However, she was not successful in making it a commercial hit. The following year she moved to Los Angles, after Red Hill ceased operations, and moved to the secular music. Subsequently, she began to work the likes of Glen Ballard, Dr. Luke, and Max Martin. Over the next few years, she would adopt Katy Perry as her stage name, be dropped from The Island Def Jam Music Group and also Columbia Records. In 2007 she eventually signed a record deal with Capitol Records.
Katy Perry rose to fame in 2008 with the release of her hit singles “I kissed a Girl” and “Hot and Cold” from her second studio album One of the Boys. Her first single caused controversy for the homosexual themes.
In 2010 Perry with her album Teenage Dream shifted her musical focus towards disco. Singles from this album such as “California Gurls”, “Firework”, “Teenage Dream”, “E.T.” and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” were all chart toppers on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, while “The One That Got Away” toped at number three.
For the first time in the US a female artist had produced an album with five songs ranked number one the US, which was only second to Michel Jackson‘s Bad overall.
In 2012, her album was re-released as Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, which included the songs “Part of Me” and “Wide Awake”. In 2013 she released her fourth album Prism where her music style had shifted towards pop and dance.
